周末

这周末数据的进展不错;终于出了些想要的结果.
加班到周末下午,带Kitty去海边.今天海边的大狗很少.我带着Kitty一直走到海滩的尽头.

在曼大时候每天清扫办公室的清洁员都是早上干活,不是7点多到单位根本碰不到他们.为了节省资源,他们套在垃圾箱(bin)上的塑料袋不是一次性的,而是很厚能用比较久的.他们埋头干活,碰到人招呼也不打.后来到了布拉德福德管理学院,一共才没见了清洁员两次,学校就把每个人办公室的垃圾桶撤走了.号称是为了环保:老师们需要把垃圾分类以后放到楼道里公用的分类垃圾箱里.但有的时候分类不是像Dummy Variable那么容易.尤其是是复合材料制成的东西,往往要在往哪里里放东东脑筋.

杜伦的清洁员是每天下午老师们下班以后,6点准时开始工作.我一般都要加班到7点,所以几乎天天能碰到她.我中午一般从餐厅端饭回到办公室吃,她很nice地除了打扫以外还要帮我去还盘子.一来二去我们就熟识了.以前杜伦商学院的服务人员是从别的公司派遣来的,但后来她发现新的制服上有了杜伦大学的标志,她就琢磨是不是有什么变化.过了不久,她的猜想得到了验证,原来杜伦大学把他们从原来的服务公司聘为了杜伦大学的员工.工资不变的情况下,每年还能多几天假期.这礼拜我问她以前是做什么的,她说年轻的时候在一艘游轮上工作;第二天她带了一幅当年的宣传手册给我看,原来她在游轮上是变魔术的.她钻到箱子里,魔术师用剑插进箱子里的魔术之类的.

考试

这几天没顾上更新,因为做数据很忙;过程很曲折;下班就快8点了,回家做饭以后还得判考卷.今天终于差不多做完了,能松一小口气;还有一篇要改,赶EFA15号的截至日期.

这次考试总体来说学生们对于知识的掌握还是不错的,比较欣慰.同时也看出两个问题.学生们普遍掌握了一些主要论文(paper)的主旨,并能做出比较准确的总结;但在考虑怎么利用这些论文来解决问题上,还是动得脑筋不够.看到问题,往往是把相关的论文作出一个介绍,而不能有针对性地,利用论文作为工具,来解决提出的问题.第二个问题是高来高去,旁征博引,却忘记讲一些最基本最重要的东西.比如回答一篇谈Fama(1998)论文题目,一些学生评述了大量相关文献,却忘记提到Fama(1998)这篇文章本身.

又下雪了

礼拜六一早起来,外面白茫茫一片,竟然又下雪了;周五的时候确实很冷,但没想到上次的冰雪消融以后,又会来一场.我下午去学校加了一会儿班,趁太阳没下山,带Kitty去玩雪.我们先爬上一个山坡,Kitty又在一大片空地上疯跑.一会儿,它跑不动了,原来是她爪子上的毛挂了厚厚的冰.应该给Kitty买两双鞋穿了;不知道有没有她的鞋码.

周日看了看车的行情,考虑换辆车;但看得上的价格都不菲,还是再等等吧.

做数据

昨天同事给我们的project做数据,做出来的结果不好;但过了一会儿,打电话过来,结果又变好了.今天中午吃饭,我问他怎么想到新方法的;他说,一位博士生看数据结果不好,建议他"拜春哥";拜了以后,就想出了新办法.
